Irv Smith was honored along with his brother Ed at Mt. Holly Pro Day 1999. Born October 13, 1971, Irv was an outstanding athlete at Pemberton High School. He earned all-division, all-county and all-state accolades as a tight end, linebacker and safety at Pemberton High School. He was the team captain as a junior and senior. He varsity lettered for three years in three sports. His talent was recognized by Notre Dame where he played collegiate football and baseball. On the football field he caught 23 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns and was concensus All-American. On the baseball field he was a star outfielder for the Fighting Irish and was selected his junior year at Notre Dame by the Houston Astros in the 1992 baseball draft. He elected to remain at Notre Dame to play his senior year. In 1993, Irv was a 1st round draft pick (20th overall) of the New Orleans Saints. He was the first tight end selected in the draft that year. Irv wore #82 and was a favorite receiver. He was first among the Saints' tight ends to have 41 receptions for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was in 1996 while playing the Washington Redskins that Irv got to play against his brother Ed, also a tight end. In 1998 Irv played for the San Francisco 49ers. He appeared in 16 regular-season games for San Francisco with eight starting assignments at tight end. He led San Francisco tight ends with 25 receptions for 266 yards and five touchdowns. In 1999 the "new" Cleveland Browns did themselves and the salary cap-strapped San Francisco 49ers a favor by acquiring Irv. In a strange quirk of fate, he and his brother Ed were vying for the same position at Cleveland. Today, Irv is retired from football and resides in Scottsdale, Arizona.
