Dave "Lefty" Robinson was the honoree for Mt. Holly Pro Day 2000. Born on May 3, 1941, Lefty lived in Mt. Laurel, NJ and attended Moorestown High School where he was a standout in football, basketball, and baseball. He earned the nickname "Lefty" for being a left-footed kicker. Dave Robinson is a Burlington County sports legend. He was a member of three unbeaten NJSIAA championship teams:
A dominant two-way lineman for the Penn State Nittany Lions in the early sixties, Robinson helped Penn State capture back-to-back Lambert Trophies in 1961 and 1962. During his final season at Penn State, Robinson was named First Team All-American and was selected the Top Collegiate Lineman by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association. He was a First Team All-East selection and was named the Newark Athletic Clubs College Athlete of the Year in 1962. A three year letterman, Robinson played in the 1960 Liberty Bowl and the 1961 and 1962 Gator Bowls. He was named to the All-time Gator Bowl team and received first-team All-American on four different postseason squads in 1962. Robinson was a first-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers. After backing up incumbent Dan Currie during his rookie season, Robinson became the starting left side linebacker for the Packers and remained in that role with the team through 1972. Alongside the immortal MLB Ray Nitschke and Pro Bowler Lee Roy Caffey, the three formed one of the best starting units of linebackers in NFL history. Robinson was highly adept at defending the run and against the pass. He intercepted 21 passes as a Packer, including five in 1966, which tied cornerback Bob Jeter for the team lead. Robinson played on the winning 1965 NFL Championship team and Super Bowl I and II giving the Packers three consecutive championship titles (1965, 1966, 1967). After Lombardi's retirement as Packers' head coach following Super Bowl II, the aging team went into a period of decline under new coach (and former defensive coordinator) Phil Bengtson. Individually, Robinson continued to shine. He was named 1st Team All-Pro by the NEA and UPI in 1968. In 1969, Robinson was again named 1st Team All-Pro by the NEA and UPI and was also chosen for the 1st Teams of the New York Daily News, PFW and The Sporting News. Robinson suffered a setback during the 1970 season when he tore his Achilles tendon, but was ready for the start of the 1971 season under new head coach Dan Devine. Although the team rebounded from a 4-8-2 record in Devine's first season to finish 10-4 and win the NFC Central Divisional title, the 1972 season would be Robinson's last in a Packers uniform. Lefty finished his professional football career playing two seasons with the Washington Redskins (1973 and 1974) playing under another future Hall of Fame head coach, George Allen. Robinson retired from the NFL in August 1975 after a career of twelve professional seasons. After football Dave "Lefty" Robinson was the secretary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio and was a partner in a beer and wine distributorship. He and his wife, Elaine, raised three sons. In 1997, Dave was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and in 2013, he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. Through his accomplishments as an athlete, business professional and man, Dave Robinson has always brought great credit to Burlington County.
