Microsoft's New Generation Certification framework has three levels of Microsoft certification. The first is the Specialist series with the Microsoft
Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) credential. Microsoft
Certified IT Professional (MCITP) or Microsoft
Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) make up the second series, and your technology focus determines which of these titles you receive. The third and highest level is the Architect series with the Microsoft Certified Architect
(MCA) credential.

BECOMING MICROSOFT CERTIFIED
The new certification framework
was created to be more targeted, relevant and cost-effective. Individuals can
more quickly acquire relevant credentials to prove their expertise and managers
can more easily distinguish candidates who meet specific job criteria.
To achieve Microsoft certification you must pass the authorized exam(s). The best way to prepare for the exams is with
authorized, instructor-led training.
Three series of credentials in Microsoft New Generation Certification Framework:
Microsoft
Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), the first series, validates
core technology and product skillsfeatures, functions and implementation. These certifications enable professionals to target specific technologies and to distinguish themselves by demonstrating in-depth knowledge and expertise in their specialized technologies. An MCTS is consistently capable of implementing, building, troubleshooting, and debugging a particular Microsoft technology.
Microsoft
Certified IT Professional (MCITP) or Microsoft
Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) make up the second series.
Your technology focus determines which of these titles you receive. This series
validates specific job-role skills outside of core technology, such as operational
processes and procedures and analyzing business problems. Individuals who have
current, related Microsoft certifications will be able to follow an upgrade path
directly to this series.
Microsoft Certified Architect
(MCA) is the third series. The
requirements for this credential are rigorous and culminates in an oral review
by a prestigious board. Candidates for this certification will also need to prove
that they have been working in IT for 10 years and acting in an architect capacity
for at least 3 years.
We’ve outlined all of the courses that support your preparation for the Microsoft certification exams on individual product pages. Click the desired link in the table below to see the certification paths available for that technology.

New Generation Certification Lifecycle Policies
The new generation of Microsoft Certifications—Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), and Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD)—have lifecycle policies in place to ensure that Microsoft Certification remains an indicator of up-to-date, relevant skills on Microsoft technologies.
MCTS, MCITP, or MCPD certifications will retire when Microsoft discontinues mainstream support for the related technology. Typically, mainstream support is discontinued 7 to 10 years after the initial product release. When support ends, your related certification will retire.
When a certification that you have earned retires, the record of your certification moves to a section on your transcript for retired credentials, to allow you to retain documentation of your experience with Microsoft technology. After a certification retires, you can no longer create or download related materials, such as welcome kits, certificates, and logos. All related exams that you have passed remain listed as "passed" on your transcript, as they do today.
Recertification Policy for Professional Series?
In Microsoft's initial communications about the Professional Series certifications, they announced that a "refresh" or recertification of the MCITP and MCPD credentials would be required within three years. This policy has changed. The updated policy is to retire a certification when mainstream support for the related technology retires, as described above. There is no action required from you if you earned a Professional Series certification before the policy change; the updated policy applies to your certification, which will be valid until mainstream support for the related technology retires.
